From Monsters and Critics.com Books Interviews M&C has recently featured both a book review of Betty Smith: Life of the Author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as well as an interview with the author Valerie Raleigh Yow. This month’s pick is the biography of Betty Smith for 2 reasons. Although the book club focuses primarily on literary and contemporary classics, I chose this book because not only is it a way to get readers who might have missed out on August’s pick a try, this is also the first published biography of Betty Smith, the author of the remarkable classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which was my first book club selection. So with that, I recommend readers visit A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but also visit the woman behind the work, a writer who for many years had been mislabeled a mere “woman’s writer” when that is not the case. Anyone who is a fan of Smith, now is your chance to know more. Published by Wolf's Pond Press, Amazon notes the publication date is January 31, 2008 so you’re just in time.
