Book Review: Stupid and Contagious by Caprice Crane

She thinks her new neighbor Brady Gilbert is a retard, he thinks Heaven Albright is a psycho, is there any doubt these two are going to wind up discovering something wonderful with each other? Of course not but Crane takes a well-used theme, interjects a liberal amount of humor and crackpot ideas to create a winner.

Fired from her PR job, Heaven finds herself waiting tables at a trendy restaurant where she discovers dealing with the public requires more diplomacy then she is capable of. Several bitchy customers, a mounting pile of complaints and snatching toilet paper rolls from a woman’s purse all add up to failure but to add insult to injury, it is Heaven’s own “complaint” letter, sent to the bosses as a joke that gets her fired yet again.Coming out of a relationship from hell, Brady has little interest in doing anything more then trying to grow his lackluster record business and attempt to get Cinnamilk, his latest invention brought to the marketplace. Too bad he can’t keep Heaven from reading his mail or visiting unannounced anymore then he can prevent his psycho-ex from bursting into his otherwise well ordered world. In a brainstorm, Brady decides to go to Seattle where he hopes to pitch Cinnamilk to Starbucks founder Howard Schultz. The trip rapidly spirals into chaos when Heaven invites herself along. Between trying to sign on a new band, dealing with ex’s, rental cars, stockpiling junk food and evading the many layers of Schultz’s security, Brady and Heaven find themselves living in a whirlwind and where it touches down next is anyone’s guess. Lines like Heaven wondering if a waiter was practicing safe soup sex along with references to Tab and Funyons add an amusing nod to pop culture while Brady’s take on Starbucks transformation of the morning coffee ritual hits a resonant note.
